Inquests & Inquiries

Inquest Barristers

Our Inquest barristers are experts in Coronial law and have considerable experience of inquest hearings arising from a variety of circumstances and settings, these include:

  • death in custody
  • death in care home
  • workplace accidents resulting in death
  • homicides
  • Death involving restraint.

When representing bereaved families and corporate bodies, our barristers first-class court advocacy skills and delicate handling of witnesses ensures that evidence is clearly presented to the Coroner or Jury. Our barristers understand the need for sensitivity and compassion in these often emotionally charged and distressing cases.

Public Inquiries

Chambers accepts instructions on a wide range of public inquiry matters and for a variety of interested parties, including individuals, senior professionals and public officials. These cases commonly involve high volumes of documents such as investigation reports, statements and expert evidence. Members of Chambers are also instructed as ‘Counsel to the Inquiry’ to advise on legal matters, undertake disclosure review and both prepare for and question witnesses at the inquiry’s public hearings.

The primary purpose of public inquiries is, according to the government who convenes them, is to ‘prevent recurrence’. Our barristers have a forensic and astute approach to examining the evidence to identify key issues and potential concerns, making them suitable for instruction on the most complex of inquiries.

Examples of inquiries include:

  • transport accidents
  • fire accidents
  • terrorist attacks
  • mismanagement of pension funds
  • outbreaks of disease
  • self-inflicted deaths in custody

Members of Chambers have recently been instructed as either Counsel to the Inquiry or to represent interested parties in the UK Covid-19 Inquiry, the Post Office Horizon IT Inquiry, the Undercover Policing Inquiry, the Lampard Inquiry and the Independent Inquiry for Afghanistan.
