Military Law

Mountford Chambers have specialised in representing Her Majesty’s Armed Forces for over 25 years. During that period members of chambers have appeared in some of the most serious and high-profile Court Martials and Inquiries in English legal history, including the Iraqi abuse trials and the Baha Mousa Public Inquiry.

Members appear in all of the Courts Martial centres in the UK, Germany and Cyprus and have also appeared in cases in Belize, Iraq, Afghanistan and Brunei. They regularly appear in the Court Martial Appeal Court and represent both service personnel and members of their families who are subject to service law. Mountford Chambers supports the Association of Military Courts Advocates, SSAFA and Help for Heroes.

Chambers provides representation and advice for those involved in service inquiries and administrative and disciplinary matters, including Army Board and Service Complaints Hearings. Members of chambers also represent service personnel and their family members in Inquests, both as interested parties and family members.

Barristers at Mountford Chambers have acted for members of the Armed Forces across all three services for both military and civilian offences including allegations of war crimes, murder, serious violence, fraud, drug and alleged sexual offences.

Members  advise at a “pre-charge stage” often resulting in matters being discontinued at an early point in the proceedings, and on appeals to the Court Martial Appeal Court. They will provide both oral and written advice at short notice.

Chambers has the benefit of video-conferencing facilities that permit early engagement with members of the Armed Forces in the UK, overseas or whilst in theatre, either on operational or non-operational matters. Members of chambers will travel to wherever their assistance is required.
