Sophie was recently instructed to conducting training for Lay Advocates on Ascension Island.
Ascension Island is a volcanic island located near the equator in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, with a population of approximately 800 people. The island is part of the British Overseas Territory of St Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. The island is also home to an RAF base, and to a United States Space Force base.
Lay Advocates are highly regarded members of the community who have rights of advocacy, and can advise and represent others in legal matters. They act as non-professional legal representatives in criminal and civil cases in St Helena and on Ascension Island.
Sophie was instructed to conduct the training on behalf of the Public Solicitor’s Office, which covers both St Helena and Ascension Island. The training focussed on police station attendances, bail applications and mitigation.
