R v MH, 2024, Harrow Crown Court sitting at the Central Criminal Court
Charley secured an acquittal for a defendant charged with Possession with Intent to Supply Class B, following his arrest in possession of a large quantity of individual snap bags of cannabis and a large quantity of cash.
R v H, 2024, Chelmsford Crown Court
Charley secured a suspended sentence for H, who pleaded guilty to a dwelling burglary carried out alongside two youths which involved the breaking of an urn containing the ashes of the victim’s child.

R v JB, 2023, Ipswich Magistrates’ Court
Charley defended JB, charged with sexual assault and two counts of assault by beating. Charley successfully made a half time submission in relation to all three offences following sensitive cross-examination of the complainants.
R v KS, 2023, Cambridge Magistrates’ Court
Charley defended KS who was charged with theft] after being captured on CCTV walking down someone’s drive and picking up their dog. He was then arrested 70 miles away with the dog. Charley prevented his bad character for a similar offence from going into evidence and KS was subsequently acquitted.
R v JL 2023, Stratford Magistrates’ Court
Charley defended JL against one charge of possession of a bladed article. Charley successfully argued against the admission of JL’s previous conviction for possession of a bladed article. JL was subsequently acquitted.
R v DG, 2023, Croydon Magistrates’ Court
Charley defended DG against a charge of assaulting an emergency worker and secured an acquittal on the basis that the officer was acting outside of his function as an emergency worker, after extracting significant concessions as to the officer’s understanding of his powers during cross-examination.
R v KT, 2023, Stratford Magistrates’ Court
Charley defended KT against one charge of assault by beating and two charges of malicious communications relating to communications made in Turkish, all in a domestic context during the breakdown of a marriage. Charley secured an acquittal in respect of all three offences following sensitive cross-examination of the complainant and her mother, and detailed examination in chief of the defendant in respect of his mindset and the proper interpretation of Turkish words.
Drugs
R v JH, 2023, Croydon Crown Court
Charley secured a suspended sentence for a defendant found to have played a significant role in the possession with intent to supply both Class A and Class B drugs.
Driving
R v HHR (A company), 2024, Harrow Crown Court
Charley successfully represented HHR, a hire car firm, at an appeal of a conviction for failure to provide details of a driver. HHR had previously been found guilty by a District Judge in the Magistrates’ Court.
R v OL, 2024, Guildford Magistrates’ Court
Charley successfully argued for exceptional hardship on the basis of the impact of a disqualification on OL’s business, and he was therefore not disqualified despite accumulating 12 points on his license.
R v AW, 2023, Luton Magistrates’ Court
Charley successfully argued for special reasons due to issues with AW’s mental health following extensive legal argument in front of a District Judge after AW pleaded guilty to driving without insurance.
R v MD, 2023, Guildford Magistrates’ Court
Charley successfully argued for the imposition of a community order and the shortest possible disqualification for MD, who had pleaded guilty to drink driving and driving under the influence of drugs following an incident in which she caused a serious road traffic accident with a passenger in the vehicle and subsequently tested positive for alcohol, cannabis and cocaine.
Youth
R v PM, 2024
Following conviction after trial for a protracted group ABH causing multiple injuries, Charley secured a conditional discharge for PM.
R v RS, 2024
RS was charged with possession of a bladed article in a public place following a review of his mobile phone revealing what appeared to be a video of him with a large knife. This took place whilst RS was subject to a Referral Order. Following arguments in court and written representations, the proceedings were discontinued.
R v DP 2023
DP was charged with a street robbery of a mobile phone. Following the entry of a not guilty plea and case management in anticipation of a trial, Charley persuaded the CPS that evidential and public interest issues with the case were of such significance that the case should be dropped. The CPS subsequently discontinued the prosecution.
