Prior to commencing pupillage, Anthony volunteered with post-conviction charities and law clinics including the Sheffield Miscarriages of Justice Review Centre, Innovation of Justice and the California Innocence Project in San Diego. Anthony is also a member of Amicus ALJ, a charity providing representation for those facing the death penalty in the US. Whilst at university, he spent a year abroad in Germany, studying law.
During the bar course, Anthony won his Inn of Court’s mooting competition. He has also been the recipient of a BPTC Advocacy Scholarship, the Buchanan Prize and Kennedy Scholarship.
During the first six months of pupillage, Anthony drafted skeleton arguments on issues of gang-related bad character and the admissibility of footprint forensics in a high-profile murder trial, and drafted grounds for Judicial Review of a Judge’s decision to remand a defendant.
Since getting on his feet, Anthony regularly appears in the Magistrates’, Youth and Crown Courts.
In the Youth Court, Anthony secured a Youth Rehabilitation Order for a young defendant charged with 24 separate offences, including robbery and possession of bladed articles.
In the Crown Court, he successfully negotiated a basis of plea for a client charged with cultivating cannabis, resulting in a sentence that allowed his immediate release. He also secured a Youth Rehabilitation Order for a young defendant committed to the Crown Court for sentence. Further, Anthony obtained a suspended sentence for a defendant charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, described by the Judge as “at the highest level of ABH, on the cusp of GBH and wounding.”
Recently, after detailed cross-examination of a police officer, Anthony was successful in arguing a highly technical point during a submission of no case to answer for a charge of drink driving.
Anthony has a particular interest in the area of animal welfare, advising bodies on private prosecutions under the Hunting Act 2004 and the Animal Welfare Act 2006. He has also successfully represented defendants charged under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991.
Anthony is an advanced German speaker and has experience of advising clients in German.
