On Friday 20th September, Mountford Chambers hosted the final of the inaugural Criminal Appeals Moot 2024, in collaboration with Freedom Law Clinic and Murray Hughman Solicitors, in aid of Alzheimer’s UK. The competition, which focuses exclusively on Criminal Advocacy, is the only one of its kind and continues to grow in prestige.
The final, which raised a significant number of donations for Alzheimer’s UK, was judged by 3 representatives from Mountford Chambers including Head of Chambers Chris Henley KC, Isabelle Gillard, and Anthony James. They judged the moot alongside Luke Gittos of Murray Hughman Solicitors and the Freedom Law.
Chris Henley KC said “The inaugural Moot final featured four fierce competitors, Olivia Hardiman, William Cann, Jennifer Zhou, and Gbenga Onliyeyu who were selected from over 100 participants. The finalists all demonstrated outstanding skills in what proved to be a closely contested event. The winner, Jennifer Zhou, claimed a £500 prize, but perhaps more importantly, she took away the experience of participating in such a high-profile competition which will undoubtedly serve as a significant boost to their future career.”
Barrister, Isabelle Gillard, added “Hosting the Moot competition is a chance for us to support the next generation of criminal advocates and it is really heartwarming to see such talented advocates coming through into the profession. The competition was strong, and we are delighted that the competition generated such interest with the young criminal advocates. Roll on next year!”
