Anna Wright and Oscar Robins were invited to cross-examine police officers from Northamptonshire Police Force. The training involved the witness handling of 20 officers in a courtroom scenario over two days. The cross-examination was focused on non-compliance with police powers under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984.
Gemma Walsh, trainer at Carmar Consultants, said “Anna and Oscar demonstrated both professionalism and approachability, offering invaluable insight into the court process for student officers. Their dedication was evident as they took the time to provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to oral and written evidence, ensuring a highly informative and rewarding experience.”
More recently, Anna Wright returned to cross-examine 12 trainee detectives in a rape scenario as part of their Professionalising Investigative Programme (PIP 2). The cross-examination was based on identifying weaknesses in the officers’ application of policy and guidance documents when completing their investigation logs.
Detective Constable Angie Torley, Crime Skills Trainer, commented “It was great to work with Anna during a Courtroom scenario for the Detectives course. Her professionalism and feedback really helped the officers to prepare for evidence giving at court”.
The training was delivered by Carmar Consultants, a UK-based company supporting police forces in investigative interviewing, disclosure, child death investigations, major crime, courtroom skills, and police driver training. Their mission is to equip organisations with the skills to identify, assess, and mitigate risks through effective training strategies.
Anna Wright has previous experience training detectives as a Civilian Disclosure Advisor at the Metropolitan Police Service, advising officers under the Criminal Procedure and Investigations Act 1996. Oscar Robins has developed a keen interest in professional discipline and regulatory law and is looking forward to developing a practice in those areas.
Anna and Oscar are both available to take instructions from 31 March 2025.
