Anjelica Smerin

Anjelica Smerin is awarded the runner-up prize for the Kalisher Trust Essay competition 2025

02/05/2025

Congratulations to Anjelica Smerin, pupil at Mountford Chambers, for being awarded the runner-up prize for the Kalisher Trust Essay competition 2025.

Anjelica’s essay discussed measures to alleviate the Crown Court backlog. Her essay argues that successful reform is likely to be found in a piecemeal approach, with solutions which directly grapple with the historical underlying causes of the backlog and work in tandem with addressing the prison population crisis.

The essay warns against a “silver bullet” solution and suggests that the most appropriate reforms should come from within the current system and include diversion away from custody and the courts and include rehabilitative justice solutions.
